History of ClearWater West, Inc.
Consultants in erosion and water quality protection

Marty Mitchell inaugurated ClearWater West in 1995 when it became evident that many species of cold-water fish using Pacific Northwest streams would be listed under the Threatened and Endangered Species Act due to declines in stream health and water quality. In the ensuing years Mitchell and her associates have worked with Pacific Northwest clients to develop cutting-edge water quality protection strategies for forestry, agriculture and urban land uses as well as for parks, greenspaces and wildlands. Her articles in Erosion Control Journal are well-known to colleagues in the field.

I am a writer, trainer and technical consultant with 20 years’ experience in erosion and water quality protection. My professional interests grew out of my love of landscapes, which led me to study the formation of the earth's topography through erosion and other physical processes. Along the way, I gained valuable training in botany, biology and the earth sciences, which led me into interdisciplinary work with scientists and designers to protect and enhance ecosystems.

Education. My graduate work in physical geography at California State University focused on local and regional erosion control policies, watershed-scale erosion and its water quality impacts in the northern Sierra Nevada of California. I've been active in the development of water resource protection policies and programs in Oregon since 1986. I also serve as a peer reviewer for draft water resource protection manuals published by the US EPA’s Office of Water.

Certifications. I am a nationally-certified professional in erosion and sediment control, and serve on editorial boards and technical committees for the International Erosion Control Association. I hold a lifetime certification to teach geology, geography and geophysics at California Community Colleges, and, in Oregon, I have taught at both Mt. Hood and Clackamas community colleges.

My love of the craft of writing led me to study journalism for two years, and I have served as an editor in both journalistic and technical professional endeavors.

ClearWater West, Inc. is a registered S. Corporation in Oregon.
